James C. Lebens

American trombonist Dr. James C. Lebens holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York, completing his studies with a Doctorate from the University of Washington.  His mentors include the principal trombones of major orchestras such as the Philadelphia, Minnesota and Metropolitan Opera Orchestras, as well as contemporary trombone authority Stuart Dempster.  As an artist in residence for two years at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts, Dr. Lebens collaborated with some of the world’s finest musicians and composers.  Dr. Lebens was appointed Professor of Brass Instruments at Laval University, Quebec City, in 2003.

Dr. Lebens is a founding member and has recorded with the Laval University Brass Quintet and the Ensemble Vents et Percussion de Québec, ensembles in residence at Laval University.  He is also active as a jazz musician and a champion of contemporary music, having commissioned numerous works for his instrument.  He has recorded as soloist and chamber musician on the labels ATMA, MIREs and SNE among others, and has been heard on numerous broadcasts by the Société Radio-Canada.

In the summer of 2006, he recorded the works of Eric Ewazen for trombone and piano in collaboration with the composer for Albany Records, a disk which will include works written specifically for him.

Mr. Lebens plays Weril trombones exclusively.
